Typical Basque houses, known as "Etxea", are highly sought-after and have a history that is perfectly anchored in the region. Historically, Basque houses were built entirely of wood. The framework and the frame of the house were made by a carpenter. At that time, carpenters were the main "architects" of the houses in the Basque Country. These wooden houses were built before the 16th century. After the 16th century, new construction methods transformed the landscape of the Basque Country. The houses are no longer completely built by carpenters, but by masons. Houses in Biarritz were then built in stone and whitewashed. Today, these stone houses make up the majority of the typical houses available for purchase in Biarritz and the Basque Country.
The typical farmhouses of the Basque country and the region of Saint-Jean-de-Luz or Espelette are called "Labourdine houses".
