Art in all its forms

Saint Paul

The French Riviera is genially dotted with dream villages, each with its own personality, soul and lifestyle. But let’s agree that Saint-Paul de Vence is certainly one of the most beautiful! Just 20 minutes away from Nice and its international airport, perched on a rocky outcrop, surrounded by ramparts built at the behest of Francis I of France in the sixteenth century; it is a site with an exceptional light that has inspired countless artists and has often persuaded them to settle there permanently.

It was the case of the poet Jacques Prévert, who wrote his finest dialogues for the cinema in St. Paul; or the painter Marc Chagall, who lived in the village from 1966 to 1985, finding there an inexhaustible source of inspiration. His paintings find their most beautiful shrine at the Maeght Foundation, a unique example in Europe of a private foundation, inaugurated in 1964 by André Malraux –50 years ago exactly! -. This extraordinary architectural ensemble, a few steps from the old town, was entirely conceived and financed by Aimé and Marguerite Maeght to present modern and contemporary art in all its forms.

From the royal Gate to the South Gate through the rue Grande, one of the most beautiful pedestrian walkways of Provence, St. Paul reveals its extraordinary stone facades of the XVI and XVIII centuries to the visitors. Getting lost in its streets is a joy of every moment, between lush gardens, ancient fountains and terraces. From the ancient ramparts, the view onto the hills, with the Mediterranean Sea in the background, seems to have been created to capture what the Côte d'Azur is to the world.

Saint Paul

It is impossible to mention Saint-Paul de Vence without stopping at La Colombe d'Or, at the entrance of the village - one of the most famous hostels in Europe built in 1920 with the stones of an old castle in Aix-en-Provence. In 1949 two giants of the cinema and songs met, Yves Montand and Simone Signoret. And they got married two years later in St. Paul. Orson Welles, Picasso, Braque, Miro, Callas made the greatest triumph in this hotel of just thirteen rooms, dean of the many luxury hotels installed today in St. Paul. Note that the Principality of Monaco is only 45 minutes by car; St. Paul being Monaco’s favourite weekend destination! The Nice-Côte d'Azur International Airport is also only 15 minutes away, the city of Nice is 20 minutes away ...

Why not end with an anecdote- the village was officially called St. Paul until 2011. But using its nickname, Saint-Paul de Vence, gained such widespread acceptance that it was consequently decided to make it its official name!
