The French Riviera has always attracted celebrities. Its picture postcard landscapes, mild climate and rich heritage have made it a coveted destination for the world's greatest personalities. Michaël Zingraf Real Estate, your specialist in luxury real estate, set out on the trail of the film stars who have set foot on the French Riviera in their lifetime.

Cinema and the French Riviera, an eternal love story

The French Riviera has a rich history with the cinema. In 1895, when Louis Lumière had just invented the cinematograph, the town of La Ciotat hosted the shooting of one of the very first films in history, which was aptly named "The Arrival of a Train in La Ciotat". Almost 50 years later, Cannes was chosen to organise the first edition of its now famous Film Festival. Personalities from all walks of life discovered the incredible beauty of the place. Some, captivated by the charm of the French Riviera, chose to buy a villa there to enjoy the idyllic surroundings of the region.

Film celebrities who lived on the French Riviera

The French Riviera has been home to many former film stars. British actor David Niven, the unforgettable performer of the film The Pink Panther and a major figure in the cinema of the 1950s and 60s, acquired a famous villa in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Named Villa Lo Socoglio, this exceptional property had previously been home to one of the greatest actors of the 20th century: Charlie Chaplin! Some time later, Sean Connery, unforgettable in the role of James Bond, fell under the spell of the Roc Fleuri, a villa of more than 1,000 m² on the Cap de Nice offering a breathtaking view of the Baie des Anges. Roger Moore, another British actor who played James Bond on the screen, was also a regular on the French Riviera. He owned a villa in Saint-Paul-de-Vence (06) and lived in Monaco for many years.

AND THE CELEBRITIES OF FRENCH CINEMA?

Iconic French actress Brigitte Bardot also graced the French Riviera in her heyday. In 1958, she bought a villa on the waterfront in Saint-Tropez, a town she helped popularise in the film "Et Dieu créa la femme". Nicknamed La Madrague, this property was the scene of memorable parties where many other French film stars such as Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo stayed. Brigitte Bardot then became the owner of a majestic estate on the heights of Cannes, in Peymeinade, proof of her unconditional love for the French Riviera. Further east, in the hinterland of Nice, the mythical couple of French cinema formed by Yves Montand and Simone Signoret settled for many years in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Moreover, it was in this charming commune of the Alpes-Maritimes that the two celebrities met and got married. Lino Ventura, another sacred monster of French cinema, also used to stay in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

Film stars who still own property on the French Riviera

American actor Johnny Depp and French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis were seduced in 2001 by a wonderful property nestled not far from the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. The actor, who put the villa up for sale a few years ago, still owns the property.

In 2008, the couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie fell in love with a vast Provençal estate including the Château de Miraval, in the Var (83). In 2011, the Hollywood stars joined forces with a family of winegrowers and produced Miraval Côtes de Provence. Brad Pitt, who still lives part of the year on the property, has plans to reopen the Miraval music studios: a famous recording studio that has hosted several legendary bands and musicians (Sting, the Pink Floyd or The Cure).

Finally, international star Leonardo DiCaprio has also forged close links with the French Riviera. Although he has not bought a house in the region, he organises an annual charity gala in Saint-Tropez to raise money for the environment. The Hollywood star also regularly takes his yacht to the bay of Cannes or the waters of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez for holidays.
